Our Funding in 2024

“2024 was an interesting year for the for-purpose sector. With the ongoing effects of COVID-19, economic downturns and redirected government funding creating a perfect storm for under-resourced communities, the sector faced many challenges.

We received the highest number of grant applications in our history – 454 requesting over $4.3 million in funding. This represented a 10% increase on total applications received from last year. Although we were proud to be able to deliver almost $1.2 million in support, it highlights the escalating demand for funding and the glaring discrepancy between supply and demand.”

In response to areas of high community need, we were delighted to channel the most funding into the areas of health and wellbeing ($151,214), food insecurity ($143,380), youth ($120,829), disability ($120,522) and conservation and environment ($119,331).

Meaningful, impactful funding.

Act local, think global.

Complemented by conversations with our community, local funding priorities and donor wishes, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals offer a useful tool to ensure we are making a meaningful impact locally while aligning with a broader global movement. In 2024, we made contributions towards these goals as below.

Helping good mahi grow.

  • Mana-enhancing diability support

For CCS Disability Support and People First New Zealand Ngā Tāngata Tuatahi, delivering effective disability support starts with championing the needs of the individual. Nikau was delighted to work alongside CCS and People First to ensure people with disability have and know their rights, and are the champion of their own lives.

  • Innovative local solutions to address food insecurity.

100 years ago, community food support may have only been associated with lines snaking out of soup kitchens. In the 21st century, addressing food insecurity has produced a range of innovative, varied and hyper-local solutions that are anchored with manaakitanga (generosity/caring for others), collaboration and people power.

  • Building capability across the for-purpose sector

As a community foundation, Nikau plays a role in funding individual organisations as well as strengthening the for-purpose Te Ara Korowai.
