Introducing our new Executive Director

We are delighted to introduce Nikau Foundation's new Executive Director, Emma Lewis.

Originally from the UK, Em has an extensive background in fundraising, marketing and strategic growth, holding senior development and philanthropy management positions at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, the UK’s National Autistic Society and Tate Museums, and advisory positions at local community organisations.

"I've worked across many sectors throughout my career, helping them to raise funds to grow their reach, support their aspirations and be impactful," says Em, "But something in me changed when I became a mum. I felt an innate responsibility to be part of an organisation that focused on the long-term, not just the here and now."

Em took the position of Engagement Director at Nikau Foundation in 2019. "Nikau Foundation offered me the opportunity to play a part in making a difference to the people and places I love, and doing that in a way which is meaningful, sustainable and lasting."

Nikau Foundation chair, Dame Fran Wilde says that in her position as Engagement Director, Em played a significant role in developing the Foundation’s organisational vision, creating more meaningful experiences for stakeholders and introducing innovative strategies to effect positive change for the region’s communities. “I have every confidence that Em, as Executive Director, will continue to build on Nikau’s success and create exciting new opportunities to realise our vision."

A new chapter:

Since being established in 1991, Nikau Foundation has grown considerably. "From those early days 30-years ago when a few people sat around a table wanting to create a lasting legacy for the community, to now – our vision is a shared one. I look forward to continuing to grow Nikau so that, together, we can create happy, healthy and thriving communities."

"The next chapter of Nikau Foundation is a really exciting one – while we continue to grow and streamline, we look forward to deepening our connections with our community," says Em. "Everywhere you look in our region, there are amazing people doing truly inspiring things. I'm honoured to be in a role that allows me to see this mahi in action."

"As a funder, it is our responsibility to ensure the voices of our communities are being heard – our biggest opportunity is to create space to bring people together, share knowledge and understand the challenges our communities are facing on a deeper level so we can create more meaningful change where it is needed the most."

Acknowledging shifts in how people are thinking about philanthropy, Nikau Foundation also looks forward to providing a vehicle through which people can effect lasting change, more and more. "We have seen a huge shift over the last ten years," says Em, "From impulsive giving to thinking about how we can give in a more impactful way. Giving through a community foundation offers just that – it is strategic and personal and will last forever."
